Every year I support the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal. I always buy a poppy (and I never throw them away). My grandfather served with the Royal Air Force during WWII as a cartographer and my brother-in-law is currently serving in the Royal Air Force (based at RAF Shawbury) as a medic.
Supporting the men and women of wars gone by as well as those currently on active service in Afghanistan is very important.
Last year, my creative mind wanted to make either a cross-stitch pattern or crochet pattern for a poppy. Last year the Royal British Legion was celebrating 90 years so it would have been quite poignant but for whatever reasons, I did not manage to do this in time.
This year, I was determined that I was going to make something, and after much trial and error, I managed to make the poppy shown above.
The pattern that I wish to share with you today is a hybrid of a variety of patterns that I came across whilst scouring the internet together with a few additions of my own.
Remembrance

- DK yarn in red (A) and black (B)
- 3.5mm (E) hook
- Yarn needle
Note: UK crochet terminology is used throughout
Flower Base:
With "A" ch4, join ss
Round 1: ch3, 15tr into ring, join ss (16)
Petals (x4):
Row 1: ch3, 1tr into same st, 2tr in each next 3 sts [8sts]
Row 2: ch3, 1tr into next st, 2tr in each next 4 sts, 1tr into each last 2 sts [12sts]
Row 3: ch1, 1dc in each to end - F/O
Rejoin yarn on next stitch of flower base and repeat rows 1 to 3 of petal. Continue until 4 petals have been made
Flower Centre:
With "B", ch2
Round 1: 5dc in 2nd chain from hook
Round 2: 2dc in each dc around [10sts]
Round 3: 1dc in next dc, 2dc in next dc (x5) [15sts]
Round 4: 1dc in next dc, dc2tog (x5) [10sts]
F/O - weave yarn using running stitch through last row and then pull to close
Secure the centre of the flower to the poppy petals and then weave in all loose ends.
