MASTERCLASS #1 - Whipped Backstitch

The Tatsunoko Seahorse that I have just posted features a new technique that you may or may not have heard of before: "Whipped Backstitch".

It's fairly easy to do as it's basically backstitch with an extra dimension:

To work it, this is what you need to do:

First stitch your backstitch border (or whatever) using 2 or  more strands of thread (on my Tatsunoko Seahorse design I have done my border in 2 strands of DMC colour variation #4210).  Once you have finished that, you need to add the "Whipped dimension" (on my Tatsunoko Seahorse design this was done using 1 strand of DMC light effect E130).

Secure the single strand on the back of the work and bring the needle up through a hole in the fabric between two of the back stitches.  Then, bring the needle underneath the backstitch (without piecing the fabric) and pull through.  Continue until the whole border etc.. has been completed and fasten off thread on the back.

When worked in two colours, it gives the design a nice braided effect:

Give it a try and let me know what you think!!!
